Cocaine and Rain Forest Loss?

The new threat to rain forests? How about cocaine..coca farming, to be precise. It seems that coca farming (coca is used to produce cocaine), is a major factor in deforestation.

In an article written by Brian Handwerk for the National Geographic, ecologist Liliana M. Davalos documented rain forest loss as an indirect result tied to coca farming. According to Davalos, “coca cultivation is taking a heavy toll on plant and animal species in one of the world’s richest biodiversity hot spots.”
