100 pilot whales may be in danger of being stranded in a sea loch in the Western Isles.
A pod of whales, many of which are bearing severe head injuries, possibly from previous attempts to stand themselves on the rocky shore, are circling the area in apparent confusion.
Experts worry that should any of the whales continue to try to beach themselves, the rest of the pod will follow suit. This would almost certainly lead to a high mortality rate.
